Starter decks are the cheapest product in the game, and most of what is inside them is worth cents. A few cards are not. This is the list of the most valuable base printings from starter decks today, and every one of them sells for more than the deck did at retail.

Why a starter card gets expensive

Two reasons, and they rarely overlap. The first is play: a starter deck card that becomes a four of in a top meta deck gets bought by every player building it, and starter decks stop being printed long before demand fades. The second is art: the Shanks from ST16 is the best example, a starter leader whose art turned it into a collector card. Both kinds hold value for as long as the deck is out of print.

Tip: if a starter deck is still on shelves and one of its cards is on this list, the deck is the cheapest way to buy that card.
