Population Report 101: What PSA Numbers Tell You Before You Buy

Two cards can have the same price and completely different futures. The population report is how you tell them apart, and it takes one minute to read.

The population report is PSA's public count of every copy of a card it has ever graded, broken down by grade. It is free, it is updated constantly, and almost nobody reads it before buying. They should. The report answers the two questions that decide whether a graded card holds its value: how many exist, and how easy is it to make another one.

The three numbers

  • Total graded. How many copies have been through PSA. A total in the hundreds is scarce; in the thousands, the card is common in graded form no matter how it feels.
  • Gem rate. The share that came back PSA 10. Above 80% means a PSA 10 is easy to make and the premium over raw will stay thin. Below 50% means a PSA 10 is genuinely hard, and it will carry a premium.
  • Growth. How fast the total is rising. A card whose population doubles in six months has a raw supply that keeps flowing into slabs, and that caps the graded price.

Two cards, one price, two futures

Imagine two cards at $2,000 raw. The first has 2,800 graded copies and an 89% gem rate. The second has 380 graded copies and a 60% gem rate. The first will always have a PSA 10 for sale; its graded premium is small and stays small. The second has a graded supply that barely grows, and every PSA 10 that surfaces meets several buyers. Same price today, different price in a year.

Total tells you how rare it is. Gem rate tells you how rare it will stay.

💡 Price analysis PREMIUM VALUATION

Trading near its recent high, the card continues to command a premium valuation. Scarcity supports long term confidence, though upside from current levels may be more measured.
