From Practice to Podium: How to Test a Deck Against an Expert Bot Before a Tournament

Ten games against a bot that blocks, counters and redirects correctly tells you more about a list than a week of goldfishing. The five things to test, in order.

Goldfishing a deck, playing it against nobody, tells you its best case. A tournament is the opposite of a best case. Between the two sits a practice partner that plays real defence, and that is what an Expert bot is for: it blocks with the right Blocker, counters when one card closes the gap, uses its leader ability when it pays, and never leaves DON!! idle.

The five tests

  • The curve. Play five games and note every turn you ended with DON!! unspent. Two or more per game means the curve is wrong, not your luck.
  • The Blocker count. If the bot's aggro lists take you to 2 Life by turn 4 in most games, you need more early Blockers.
  • The finisher. Count games where you had lethal on board and failed to see it. The bot calculates lethal exactly; learn from how it commits.
  • The mirror. Set the bot to your own leader. If you cannot beat your own list, someone at the event will play it better than you.
  • The meta. Run the top two leaders from the tier list. Those are the decks you will face in rounds one and two.
A bot that defends correctly is worth ten opponents who do not.

What the bot will not teach you

Reads. A bot does not bluff a Counter it does not have, and it does not tilt after losing a Life race. Those are human skills, and they come from human games. Use the bot to make the mechanics automatic so that at the table you can spend your attention on the person across from you.

Questions people ask

How do I practice One Piece card game alone?

Play against an Expert bot that blocks, counters and uses its leader ability correctly, such as the Practice Arena in MugiPocket, and test the curve, the Blocker count, the finisher, the mirror and the top meta decks.

Is a bot good practice for One Piece tournaments?

For mechanics, yes: a bot that defends correctly makes lethal math and DON!! efficiency automatic. Reads and bluffs still need human games.
