Doflamingo OP14-060: The Redirect Trick Most Players Use Wrong

The Heavenly Demon's leader ability turns your opponent's attack into a choice you control. Here is the decision tree that wins at 3 Life, and the full list we run in Practice Arena.

Every Doflamingo player learns the ability on day one: when your Leader or a Donquixote Pirates Character is attacked, pay one DON and redirect the attack to another card you control. Most players then use it the same way for the rest of their lives, as a panic button at 1 Life. That is the least valuable moment to press it.

The rule in one line: redirect is a tempo trade. You spend one DON now to deny one Life or one Character later. It is worth it exactly when the thing you save is worth more than the DON, and when the card that absorbs the hit survives it.

The decision tree we teach the bot

MugiPocket's Expert bot pilots this leader with a fixed set of rules, and after testing them across the owner's deck we kept the ones that held up. They work for humans too.

  • Leader attacked at 3 Life or less: redirect to a Donquixote Character whose power is at least the attacker's. The hit whiffs, you keep the Life, the Character stays.
  • Leader attacked at 4 Life: only redirect if you still have 3 or more DON after paying. Below that, the DON matters more than the Life card.
  • Leader attacked at 5 Life: never. Take the card. A Life card is a draw; a DON is your next turn.
  • 0 Life, any attack: redirect to any Character at all, even one that dies. A body is cheaper than the game.
  • A Character worth 4 cost or more would die: redirect to another Donquixote that survives, or take it on the Leader if you are at 4 Life or more and the victim costs 6 or more.
  • The attack would whiff anyway: do nothing. Paying to redirect an attack that was going to fail is the most common mistake on ladder.
Redirect is not a shield. It is a way to choose which of your cards takes the hit, and sometimes the right answer is none of them.

The list

This is the exact 50 we run in Practice Arena against the Expert bot. It leans on OP14-073 and OP14-076 for early bodies, keeps four Blockers for the redirect targets, and holds two copies of the big Doflamingo for the late game. The first eight cards are shown below; the full list, with legality check and one tap import, is free in the app.

The two turns that decide it

Turn two and turn three are where Doflamingo games are won. On turn two you want a Blocker on board and every remaining DON on the Leader, attacking their Leader. On turn three you want a second Donquixote body with power at least equal to their Leader, because that is your first real redirect target. If you reach turn four with two Donquixote Characters standing and 4 Life, the redirect rules above take over and the opponent has to solve a board that punishes every attack.

Practice it against the Expert bot, which now uses the same redirect rules against you. If you can beat a bot that redirects correctly, you can beat most of your locals.
